How to download an Instagram story

Four steps from a link to a saved file. The plates show this site on a phone.

  1. Step 1: Paste a link or type a username

Copy a story link from the Instagram share sheet, or type the handle with or without the @. A profile link works too. Tap View to search.

  2. Step 2: Find the story you want

Stories from the last 24 hours fill a grid, newest first, each with its age in the corner. A play mark flags videos.

  3. Step 3: Open the story full screen

The story opens with the account name and its age at the top. Swipe or use the arrows to move between stories; Save sits under each one and keeps a photo as a JPG.

  4. Step 4: Save a video as an MP4

A video story plays muted. The speaker button beside Save turns the sound on, and Save downloads the MP4 with its audio.

What the downloader can and can't do

It can

  • Save any story a public account posted in the last 24 hours
  • Download photos as JPG files and videos as MP4 files with sound
  • Accept a story link, a profile link or a plain username
  • Name each file with the account and the time the story went up
  • Run in Safari, Chrome or any current browser, with nothing to install

It can't

  • Download stories from a private account
  • Save a story after Instagram has removed it
  • Show anything when the account has no stories right now
  • Save Close Friends stories, which only that list can see
  • Download all of an account's stories in one tap

Questions people ask

Short answers about privacy, limits and saving files. The full FAQ covers every tool. Something not covered? Write to us.

How do I download an Instagram story?

Enter the username or a story link, tap View, open the story and tap Save. Photos download as JPG, videos as MP4.

Will the account know I saved their story?

No. The file comes through our server, and no Instagram account is involved, so nothing carries your name.

What format and quality are the files?

JPG for photos, MP4 for videos. You get the file Instagram serves for that story, passed through our server unchanged.

Where do downloaded stories go on an iPhone?

Open the Files app and look in Downloads. To move one into Photos, open it there, tap share and save it.

Where do they go on Android or a computer?

Wherever your browser saves downloads. On Android that's usually the Downloads folder.

Can I paste a link to a single story?

Yes. It loads every current story from that account. Find yours in the grid and tap Save.

What does “No stories right now” mean?

The account hasn't posted a story in the last 24 hours. Stories it pinned to the profile can still be saved from the Highlights Viewer.

Can I download all of their stories at once?

No. Each story has its own Save button, and the file names keep the files in posting order.

Can I download highlights too?

Yes. Open the account in the Highlights Viewer, play a highlight and tap Save on any item.

Why is a story I just saw on Instagram missing?

We keep each account's stories for about five minutes. Search again a little later and it will be there.

Can I see a private account?

No. We only show what Instagram already shows to anyone who opens a public profile without logging in. If an account is private, you'll see a note saying so and nothing else.

Why do I see “Slow down a little”?

Each IP address can make 60 requests to our servers in 10 minutes, and one search uses a few of them. The message says how long to wait. If you search a lot in a short time we may also ask for a quick check that you're a person.

What you get when you tap Save

  1. 01Your browserSends the username you typed. No login, no account of yours.
  2. 02Our serverAnswers from its copy if it has a recent one, or asks the provider.
  3. 03Data providerReceives the username only, never who asked for it.
  4. 04InstagramShows what any logged-out visitor of the public profile can see.
One search, left to right. The answer travels back the same way to this page; your name never enters it.

Save gives you the media file itself: a JPG for a photo story, an MP4 for a video. Our server fetches the file Instagram serves for that story and hands it to your browser as a download.

Each name holds the username, the word story and the time the story went up, in UTC. A video @nasa posted at 14:32 on October 1, 2026 saves as nasa_story_2026-10-01T14-32-00.mp4.

Where the file lands depends on your browser. On an iPhone, Safari keeps downloads in the Files app, under Downloads. On Android and on a computer, look in your browser's download location.

The lookup is the Story Viewer's: our server asks a data provider for what logged-out visitors see and keeps the answer for about five minutes. The provider gets a username, nothing about you.

Stories expire a day after they go up, and an expired story drops off this page too, so save it while it's in the grid. Pinned stories live on as highlights in the Highlights Viewer.

How long a result is kept before we fetch it again
ResultKept for
StoriesAbout 5 minutesAn older copy can be shown for up to 30 minutes while a fresh one loads.
Profile details10 minutes to 2 hoursDepends on the size of the account and how often it's searched.
HighlightsAbout 6 hoursThe items inside a highlight are refreshed every 12 hours.
Posts and reelsAbout a dayUp to 36 recent posts per account, 12 at a time.

Nothing in the file changes on the way. The server passes along what Instagram serves, at the size and quality Instagram chose for that story, and keeps no copy of the download itself.

Why people save stories

Common things people keep before a story expires.

An event schedule

Festivals and conferences post timetables and floor maps as stories. Saved, the file opens even where the signal drops.

A recipe split across frames

Food accounts often post a recipe one step per story. Save each frame and the file names keep the steps in posting order.

An announcement before it expires

Holiday opening hours, a discount code, a change of venue. A saved copy is something to check, or show someone, after the story is gone.

A mention of your work

When a public account shares a story about your shop or your art, a copy is handy for your records or your portfolio.

Research and archiving

Journalists and social media teams keep copies of stories from brands and public figures, since an expired story leaves no trace.

Watching later without data

Save a long video story over Wi-Fi and watch it later on a train or a plane, with no connection.
